Summary
16-year-old Roberta Rohbeson lives with her mother and half-sister, Julie, in a crumbling neighborhood overlooking a garbage-filled ravine. Roberta narrates her present-day activities that include she and a classmate, Vicky, cutting school and meeting up with a series of low-life young men. Simultaneously, Roberta provides us with a running account of the very violent cross-country crime spree she went on with her father when she was 11.
Critique
This violent novel is not for everyone and Roberta is not a reliable narrator. That said, however, this dark novel has many human moments and makes for a cathartic read.
