Summary
Fifteen-year-old Alessandra Cecchi lives in Florence when the malevolent and fanatical monk Savonarola ousts the Medicis and brings about an extremely violent and repressive upheaval. During such dangerous times, Alessandra's parents feel she needs the protection of a husband and so she is married to an older art collector who promises that she can pursue her dream of becoming a painter. Sadly, Alessandra finds that her marriage was based upon deceit and that her own love belongs to another.
Critique
Dunant usually writes literary suspense but has created a complex, imaginative, and rousing historical fiction. The vivid writing draws the reader headlong into the evil and treachery of the time. Highly recommend.
