Summary
In the middle of a cyclone, fiery Sunset Jones murders her abusive husband Pete, the constable of Camp Rapture, Texas, the Depression-era sawmill town. When Sunset's mother-in-law, majority owner of the mill, gets Sunset to INSERT Pete as constable, the real trouble begins in the form of dead bodies and real mean, Texas-sized bad guys.
Critique
Lansdale has invented a new genre in this hard-boiled/country-noir/cowboy-crime mystery. Laugh-out-loud fun, plenty of tough-talking characters, and wonderful descriptions make the mystery secondary in this wild romp of a book. Hooray for Sunset, a woman with it all--brains, beauty, and a .38 revolver.
