Summary
Max Tivoli is born in San Francisco in 1871 with a condition that makes him appear to age backwards. Though his heart and mind age like a regular man, Max is forced to live his life out deceptively, allowing others to assume that he is the age he appears to be, in order to attempt to enjoy everyday, human pleasures like love and friendship.
Critique
An original story about life, loss, obsession and unrequited love. Deeply moving, vividly portrayed characters and sentimental storytelling make Greer's novel unforgettable. Max is an unusually likeable and sympathetic character despite his deceptions. Highly recommended reading.
