Summary
When self-exiled Scottish painter MacAlpine paints a portrait of his once-close friend and mentor, the influential art critic Nasmyth, he carries on a one-sided conversation that slowly reveals, layer by layer, the depths of deceit and betrayal in their relationship.
Critique
Though the framework of the dramatic monologue requires close attention, it rewards the reader with an atmospheric, gripping and suspenseful story, well-told, building to a surprising climax.
