Summary
Matthew Walsh has too much responsibility for a teenager, protecting his sisters Callie and Emmy from their biggest threat - their mother. Nikki Walsh terrorizes her three children with a constant stream of physical and psychological abuse. When Matthew reaches out for help, a disastrous chain of events ensues. Can Matthew and his sisters escape their mother's madness?
Critique
Nancy Werlin has created a sensitive and realistic portrait of children suffering abuse at the hands of a parent. The children's efforts to reach out for help are heartbreaking, and readers will quickly turn the pages to find out how their story ends. Do not be surprised to see this book on many young adult literature award lists next year - it's that good.
