Summary
On her twenty-sixth birthday, Dana, a black writer living in California in the 1970s, travels back in time to 19th-century Mississippi each time her ancestor, a white slaveowner named Rufus Weylin is in danger. Once there, Dana must endure the daily life of a slave, until she is whisked back to the 20th-century only when her own life is in jeopardy.
Critique
A beautiful novel that is heartbreaking and violent but captivates the reader immediately. An educational and emotional look at the practice of slavery and a dark period of American history. This book will stay with you for a long time. Highly recommended reading.
