Pursuing answers, he uncovers a conspiracy involving the Catholic Church and his own prominent family.
Critique
Benjamin Black (pen name of John Banville) has written the first of a series, an introspective crime thriller with complex characters and an elaborate plot. The atmosphere is dark and sinister, and the pace is gradual, building to a page-turning finish. Recommended.
