Summary
Nadira and her sister attempt to seek asylum in Canada with their parents in a period after 9/11 when all Muslim immigrants were asked to register. They are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh who have been living in the US under an expired VISA. At the border, they are turned away. The father is arrested when trying to reenter the US. It is up to Nadira and her sister to figure out how to free their father and save their family.
Critique
This is an excellent story of two Muslim teens who just want to be accepted into the country they have been living in for the past eight years. A very moving novel. It won the James Cook Book Award for Diversity in Teen Literature in 2007.
