Summary
Following a tragedy, a young writer takes a sabbatical from everyday life and tries to get her bearings while living outside a remote Swedish village. Connecting with an elderly Swedish woman, the two share their stories and each finds renewed courage and purpose in life.
Critique
This lyrical, poetic recounting of intergenerational friendship and search for meaning is at first difficult to get into. But the depth of feeling and the vivid descriptions of the rugged Swedish countryside soon arrest the reader's attention. Those familiar with Swedish landscape and customs will find particular delight in this modest book that can be read in one or two sittings.
