Summary
When a skeleton is found at a building site, Detective Erlendur is called in to discover the skeleton's identity and how it died. As the skeleton is slowly uncovered, a brutal story of domestic violence unfolds along with it. Meanwhile Erlendur sits at the bedside of his comatose drug-addicted daughter.
Critique
As much an introspective look at the consequences of Erlendur's abandonment of his family as a murder mystery, Indridason has written an absorbing psychological novel. The cold, austere climate of Iceland provides the perfect backdrop for the fates of the characters. Winner of the CWA Golden Dagger Award.
