Summary
When scrawny 17-year-old Lev is caught looting a fallen German pilot during the siege of Leningrad, he is given the impossible task of finding a dozen eggs for the wedding of a colonel's daughter. Joining him is Kolya, a handsome, debonair deserter who talks nonstop about literature and the women he's loved. In order to survive they must rely on each other as they live through bitter cold and hunger and encounter cannibals and Nazis.
