Summary
Headstrong 17-year-old Nell Plat is an expert seamstress but is a disappointment to her rancher husband Jack in a small town in Kansas in 1901. The mother of two baby girls, Nell saves up money by making dresses for her neighbors and then flees to Hollywood, abandoning her family. In California, Nell reinvents herself as Madame Annelle, a `modiste` whose fashions are in demand. She marries George Curran and has another daughter, Mary. As her dreams become reality, Nell's grown daughters appear on her doorstep and attempt to bribe Nell into getting them started in the film industry.
Critique
At turns heartbreaking and inspiring, this book is nearly impossible to put down once started. Of special interest for fans of sewing, of the early days of Hollywood, and of historical fiction. Highly recommend.
