Summary
On the brink of the Great Depression, timber man George Pemberton returns to North Carolina from a trip to Boston with his new bride, Serena. Together, the money and power thirsty couple builds a lumber empire, vanquishing anyone standing in their way, including National Park planners who are attempting to acquire their lands, and young Rachel Harmon, the mother of George's illegitimate son.

Critique
Unforgettable characters, brilliant plotting and eloquent prose make this one fabulous read. Suspenseful historical fiction at its finest. Ron Rash is always pitch-perfect. Highly recommended reading.
