Summary
A young baby crawls out a window while his parents are being murdered in contemporary England. Oblivious to the horror of what has happened, he crawls into a graveyard where he is confronted by two ghosts, Mr. and Mrs. Owens. They decide to adopt him, and he is nicknamed `Nobody Owens,` or `Bod` because `he looks like nobody but himself.` The graveyard is inhabited by several interesting and notable residents who also take him under their wing including a dead witch, Roman centurion, and a werewolf named Miss Lupescu. Silas, a vampire-like character who is neither living nor dead, becomes his guardian and mentor. Bod is pursued throughout his life by `the man Jack` who murdered his parents for mysterious reasons and is now in pursuit of the boy. His graveyard family both raise him and serve as his protectors from this evil figure.
Critique
Gaiman is best known for his gothic Sandman graphic novels. His writing is as dark and beautiful as the illustrations of this famous series. The Graveyard Book is advertised for children in grades 5-9, but anyone who is a fan of Roald Dahl or Tim Burton, or all things Halloween will surely enjoy it. It is reported that he will produce the movie version to be released in 2011.
