Summary
English teacher Caelum Quirk and his wife Maureen, a school nurse, survive the Columbine High School shootings in Colorado. When they relocate to Caelum's family farm in New England to escape, however, their memories of that day and their individual problems and family histories follow them across the country. There, they both have to face their fears and, much to the undemonstrative Caelum's dismay, their feelings.

Critique
Wally Lamb delivers a heart-wrenching read, creating characters out of and using the real names of the murderers and the slain in the 1999 Columbine shootings. This novel mixes the 'triumph over adversity' story line with historical elements resulting in a multilayered and complex read that is best savored. Recommended emotional reading.
