Summary
When a visiting former student admires an 18th-century painting of a carnival scene owned by Theo Parmitter, a retired professor at Cambridge, Parmitter reveals a strange story of how he came to acquire the painting. Even stranger is the tale of the woman Parmitter outbid at auction, the elderly Lady Hawdon, who claims that the picture has imprisoned her husband by design of his jilted lover who gave it to the couple as a wedding present.
Critique
Despite its slim size, this novella is a convincingly haunting and mesmerizing gothic tale that readers will devour whole and possibly lose sleep over. Recommend.
