Summary
Shetland Islands Inspector Jimmy Perez is at his girlfriend Fran Hunter's art exhibit when he encounters an emotional amnesiac. Though he disappears before Perez can help him, the man, a stranger to the islands, is found dead later that night, hanged in a fishing shed. The obvious suspect is local painter Bella Sinclair, whose flair for extravagance often results in drama, but when someone close to Bella also ends up dead, Perez must dig through decades-old secrets to uncover the real truth.

Critique
As with her award-winning `Raven Black,` Cleeves has delivered another fine murder mystery, chock-full of fascinating island characters and a vividly painted landscape. Small details like the communal shearing of sheep and the description of a local's fiddle music make this second installment in Cleeves' `Shetland Island Quartet` unmissable. This leisurely paced mystery ends memorably, `parlor-style.` Highly recommend.
