Summary
Isabel is a slave in New York City in the early days of the American Revolution. She is sold to a Loyalist household after her former owner dies. In order to gain a chance at freedom, she is offered the chance to spy for the Patriots but is not sure that their ideas of liberty really include her.
Critique
Rich with historical details, this is a moving and memorable novel that teaches readers what slavery was like during the Colonial period. The author plans to continue Isabel's story in two upcoming related books, `Forge` and `Ashes.` Sad and suspenseful but also hopeful. Recommended reading.
