Summary
Ruth Grey has been called 'slow' all her life, growing up without nurturing from her tough-as-nails mother, May, and in the shadow of her genius younger brother, Matt. Looking for comfort and finding beauty in life's ugliest corners, Ruth falls for Ruby, a sweet but unpredictable, drug-addicted young man. When she's just 18, Ruth marries, supports and has a son with Ruby. Not surprisingly, with everyone living under May's roof, violence erupts.
Critique
A heartbreaking, beautiful and lyrical novel. With Ruth as the first-person narrator of this novel, Hamilton allows readers a unique glimpse into her world. A hard-to-put-down, suspenseful read. Recommended.
