Summary
Maisie Dobbs, private detective, returns in this sixth mystery by Jacqueline Winspear. Maisie and her assistant Billy are searching for a madman who is threatening the city of London with chemical warfare. The suspect, a World War I veteran, is haunted by the war and the government's neglect.
Critique
Winspear's exploration of women's roles, divisions of class and the effects of war continue to make for smart mystery reading. Maisie is such a likeable character and her investigation methods are fascinating to read about.
