Summary
When the Second World War begins, police officer Johnny Hawke enlists but is quickly wounded. Left to perpetually don an eye-patch, Johnny cuts a memorable figure in his new career as a private detective. When Johnny is asked to find a young woman, he learns that she is not what she appears. Could her double life have led to her undoing? And what does a young runaway boy have to do with this case?
Critique
War-time England comes to life in this atmospheric first in the Johnny-One-Eye mystery series. Johnny Hawke is quite a character--sometimes thuggish and brutal and sometimes introspective and filled with self-doubt, he is also whip-smart and a delight to solve a crime with. Recommend.
