Summary
In 1958, 15-year-old Michael Berg is ill from hepatitis when he meets Hanna Schmitz, a 36-year-old tram conductress. After Michael recovers, the two begin a torrid affair that lasts until Hanna moves away without warning. Eight years later, Michael attends a war crime trial as a law student. To his great surprise, Hanna is on trial with a group of women who had served as SS guards. Unlike the others, Hanna does not defend her actions, and Michael uncovers Hanna's true secret--one that she feels is worse than her role in the Holocaust.
