Summary
Rico, a Cuban-American teen growing up in Harlem in the 1960s, feels like an outsider because of his pale skin and book smarts. Threatened with military school, he follows an older pal, Gilberto, to Wisconsin. Living with Gilberto and his hippie friends in an old farmhouse, he finds a job and a girlfriend, but is still not sure where he belongs.

Critique
The fresh voice of Rico and the 'fish out of water' situation make for a unique coming-of-age story in Hijuelos' first book for young adults. For older teens due to language and drug use.
