Summary
Cressida is almost ten when she meets neighbor George Harding, a severely disfigured soldier who is recovering post-World War II in his stately South African home. When Cressida's family faces ruin, George helps them financially--essentially buying Cressida's companionship for his nephew, Edgar. During the next several years, Cressida lives in both fear and awe of George, who takes her education on as his passion, and their mutual deep devotion turns into an inappropriate relationship.

Critique
With its gothic feel, this book is hard to put down despite its difficult themes. Though there are hints of the classics `Jane Eyre,` `Rebecca,` and `Pygmalion,` Freed has created her own memorable novel. Readers will enjoy this ultimately beautiful and hypnotic love story.
