Summary
Regret desperately wants to escape her small Korean village where women are isolated, forbidden to attend school and considered `merely vessels by which to provide society with an uninterrupted supply of men.` In order to leave Korea, Regret offers herself as a `picture bride` to strangers in Hawaii. Regret, now called Jin, is chosen and leaves home only to discover that her new husband is a poor plantation worker, an alcoholic, a gambler and a wife beater. Unheard of in Korea, Jin is able to divorce her husband and move on with her life.
Critique
A wonderful story. Powerful female characters. Some events based on historical fact in Hawaii during the early 20th century. Recommend.
