Summary
Twenty-four-year-old Annie Harper, a third grade teacher, is left behind in Tacoma, Washington, when her Army boyfriend David is sent to war in Iraq. Annie begins writing a confessional memoir that chronicles her days spent without him. Although she keeps busy with Gus, her best friend, volunteers in a home for the aged, and adopts a pet chicken, Annie questions whether or not she can stay strong in David's absence.
Critique
Told in Annie's voice and with her copious footnotes, this laugh-out-loud debut novel is a winner. Though this novel can be a bit whiny at times, there is much to enjoy, including the hilarious and insightful character Loretta. Readers will look forward to Berentson's next offering. Highly recommend.
