Portia Nathan, a 38-year-old admissions officer at Princeton, has never doubted her ability to judge an applicant until the day she meets brainy but unusual 17-year-old Jeremiah. Visiting Jeremiah's school, Portia finds herself attracted to his teacher, the compassionate John Halsey. Meanwhile, Portia's hippie mother has taken in a young pregnant girl. This combination of events leads Portia to reexamine her career, her long-time relationship with English professor Mark, and the secret that she's kept hidden all of these years.

Critique
This novel is a bit hard to get into; however, once started, its slow-building suspense makes it difficult to put down. Well-written with fascinating characters and particularly interesting insight into the college admission process. Highly recommend.
