Summary
A six-year-old boy is sent to live with a foster mother while his parents hide from the Nazis. The foster mother soon dies and the young boy is forced to wander alone from village to village. Because he has olive skin and dark eyes, villagers think he is a gypsy or Jew and mistreat him.

Critique
The author was severely criticized for his depiction of Poland during WWII. This is a moving but very difficult story to read.
