Summary
Seven-year-old Alice becomes an indentured servant upon her arrival to the United States and is treated well until she is, at age 14, gifted to her master's daughter, Nabby, and is abused and raped by Nabby's husband. Alice escapes to Cape Cod, where she is assisted by the generous widow Liddy Berry. Soon, Alice realizes that she is pregnant--and her troubles truly begin.

Critique
A suspenseful and spellbinding story of strength, set in a historically rich, pre-Revolutionary America. This novel revisits characters from Gunning's novel The Widow's War. Easily devoured and highly recommend.
