Summary
Doctor Faraday is summoned to check on a servant girl at Hundreds Hall, an estate that his mother worked at when he was a child. Since then, however, Hundreds has lost its luster; the Ayres family, once one of the wealthiest in the area, is barely surviving and cannot afford repairs. Faraday, both envious and admiring, becomes a friend to the family and, when creepy and then horrible things happen, begins to doubt his rational explanations.
Critique
Set shortly after World War II, this gothic novel combines haunted house story with psychological suspense to highlight the crumbling English class system. Slowly builds to an intense ending. Shortlisted for the 2009 Man Booker Prize.
