Summary
Tough as nails and unapologetic, Patti Black escaped a terrifying past to become the decorated Chicago cop she is today. When scandal hits the department and an assassination attempt is made on the mayor, Patti can't help but return to the South Side slum Calumet City. There, her demons catch up to her and she feels like the runaway and helpless rape victim she once was at the hands of her evil, evangelical foster father, Roland Ganz, the man she feels is behind a new series of crimes.

Critique
A hard-to-put-down, gritty police procedural with a damaged female protagonist and demented villains. This harsh look at the underbelly of Chicago is rife with violence and darkness. While Newton's atypical writing style sometimes gets in the way, this is still a memorable read. Recommended for fans of noir crime fiction.
