Summary
Like many dames before her, Jean Spangler, a bit-part aspiring actress, vanishes one night after living it up in the gritty world of 1940s Hollywood. Two years later, rising studio publicity man Gil `Hop` Hopkins can't get Jean out of his mind. Is it because Hop saw her on the infamous night? Though he suspects the worst, Hop doesn't truly know what became of Jean, and he sets about retracing her steps--steps that lead him down a road to no good.
Critique
A gritty and dark and oh-so-satisfying noir read. Megan Abbott's language and characters truly capture the era; she's a master of crime noir writing. Highly recommended reading.
