Summary
Frank and April Wheeler have lost their passion for life and for each other in the suburbs of Connecticut, and have come to the startling realization that they may never escape their uninspiring routine, let alone fulfill their intellectual and creative potential. They decide on a drastic relocation to Paris, the time leading up to which lays bare the most difficult choices of their increasingly complicated and uneasy relationship.
Critique
This sharp portrayal of suburban discontent is an American tragedy of the highest order. Yates writes with a cool precision and timeless intensity, brilliantly noticing just the right details and fully embracing the best and worst of his characters. A beautiful contribution to contemporary fiction.
