Summary
After Zoe Kruller is found brutally murdered, both her married lover, Eddie Diehl, and her estranged husband, Delray, are suspected of the crime. The other victims are the members of the families who wrestle with the possibility of the guilt of these men, especially the narrator, daughter Krista Diehl, who becomes fixated on Zoe and Delray's troubled son, Aaron. Stuck in small-town Sparta in upstate New York and seemingly branded for life, can these two young people change before history repeats itself?
Critique
Beautifully lyrical and thoughtful writing. Oates explores common ground with themes of rough men and abused women, but doesn't give readers an easy happy ending. A memorable and recommended read.
