Summary
Sixteen year-old Katya Spivak is walking in Bayhead Harbor with her two babysitting charges when she's approached by silver-haired, elegant Marcus Kidder who is immediately fixated on her. At first, Kidder seems harmless, and Katya visits his beautiful home that is impressive compared to that of her working-class family in South Jersey. Soon, Mr. Kidder's asks her to pose for a painting, and then, as Katya expects, he asks for much more. What does he really want from her? And how far will he go to get it?

Katya is a narrator who is wise beyond her years. Oates has an uncanny ability to make her readers uncomfortable. Here, she delivers an unexpected twist within a modern-day "Lolita" premise. Suspenseful reading. For fans of Joyce Carol Oates.
