Summary
Its 1933 and Cradle Cross, a depressed industrial town in Black Country, England, is still recovering from the Great War when a stranger arrives. A mysterious woman from the coast, Isa Fly enchants many of the locals, including 13-year-old Ruby Tailor; her father figure, Captin, who runs the local chip shop; and Truda Blick, a spinster whos inherited the failing button factory. Not everyone warms to Isa, though, and the women of Cradle Cross begin to suspect her as the cause of their troubles and ultimately label her as a witch.
Critique
This is a fascinating blend of atmospheric historical fiction and myth. With elegant prose and use of local dialect, the author successfully paints a portrait of an isolated town and delivers a truly enthralling read.
