Summary
As a young girl Verna Krone is forced to quit school to help support her family. She is raped by her employer, becomes pregnant, and undergoes an abortion that almost takes her life. Soon after the abortion Verna becomes pregnant again and gives birth to a son. Verna leaves her son to become a nurse. She finds a lucrative job assisting Dr. Crampton, a prominent African American doctor, who performs illegal but fairly safe abortions. Their arrangement works well until both are arrested and placed on trial.
Critique
The novel is based upon true events in the author's grandmotherís life. Dr. Crampton and Verna were front-page news in Harrisburg, PA in the early 1950s. Recommend.
