Summary
After escaping war-torn Czechoslovakia in a golem's casket, Joe Kavalier joins forces with his cousin Sam Clay to create a comic book series called The Escapist. While Joe uses his art to imaginatively destroy the Nazis, Sam, an ambitious New Yorker, has dreams of creating a comic book empire.
Critique
The novel, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2001, is a mix of Jewish lore, American history, and comic books, with sides of magic, art, and Antarctica thrown in. Chabon's themes of escape, love, heroism, and family were engrossing - I could not put this down! Highly recommended.
