Summary
Three years after the end of the Civil War, 17-year-old Abigail Sinclair and her plantation-owning family are spending the summer on the beach in their new summer cottage. Abigail's family expects her to marry Hector Newman, who is studying to become a doctor, but she falls in love with a local fisherman, a young man she is teaching to read and write. Despite her father's sinister affiliations, Abigail expands her teaching to Roanoke Island, which is home to freedmen and runaway slaves.

Critique
A familiar plot, except for the "sinister affiliation." A quick summer read. Recommend.
