Summary
As pathologist Quirke struggles to quit drinking, his daughter Phoebe enlists his help to find her good friend April, whom she senses has disappeared due to foul play. April, however, has a reputation for unreliability. She's been cast out of her well-to-do family for shunning their morality and respectability. Has she just run off for the weekend or is something more sinister afoot?

In this third book in the Quirke mystery series, Black (a pen name for John Banville) continues to mine the social mores and ethics of midcentury Dublin while capturing a fascinating character in Quirke.
