Summary
In an effort to create super-human soldiers, the US government injects a virus into a group of death row inmates. Instead, the plan goes awry and the inmates become vampires, or 'virals,' reproducing and wreaking destruction and death. A lone group of humans survives through constant vigilance and battery powered light. Their fate rests on a six-year-old girl who shares the virals' immortality but not their blood lust.

Critique
A gripping apocalyptic epic that evokes Stephen King's The Stand. Well-written, complex, and page turning. Highly recommended.
