Summary
Although Velva Jean Hart loses her mother at a very young age and her family is subsequently abandoned by her father and raised by her older sister, she remains true to her life's ambitions to become a country music performer at the Grand Ole Opry and tries not to lose sight of that as she experiences life in a changing rural North Carolina mountain town.
Critique
Richly drawn characters combined with a great coming-of-age story make for a wonderful first novel. You root for Velva Jean the whole way hoping that she'll reach her dream!
