Summary
In 1899 girls are expected to grow up to be wives or school teachers, not naturalists who go to college. But that is exactly what 11-year-old Callie wants to do. Callie reluctantly and begrudgingly learns to cook and sew while her granddad introduces her to science and the teachings of Darwin. Callie must figure out how to balance her passion for science with what her parents expect from her.
Critique
This sweet and charming story offers a glimpse into the mind of a young girl frustrated by the limited options available to her sex.
