Summary
Jessamine Luxton and her botanist/apothecary father live in an abandoned abbey on the Duke of Northumberland's estate. She helps her father tend some of his medicine gardens, but she is never allowed near the dangerous poison garden. Their quiet life is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious young man called Weed. Weed seems to have secret knowledge of the plant world that Thomas is desperate to have. When Jessamine suddenly falls ill, Weed may be her only hope to survive.
Critique
The Poison Diaries is a quick read with a surprising twist. The explanations of the uses for different plants are interesting, but the botany lessons are not overwhelming. The romance is intense but chaste, and there is just a touch of the supernatural. While starting out slowly, the story becomes fast-paced and thought-provoking with a cliffhanger ending. This is the first book in a planned trilogy. Recommend
