Summary
Joe, a retired literary agent, and Ruth Allston live in a retirement community in California. Ruth keeps busy, but Joe is searching for meaning to his life. He is supposed to be organizing his papers and writing a book. A postcard from an old friend leads Joe to find a diary kept of the couple's vacation to Denmark in 1954 shortly after the death of their son. Together the couple relives their adventure nightly as Joe reads aloud from the diary.
