Summary
Alternating chapters tell the story of Mitch and Rachel. Mitch, living with Alzheimer's disease, is in a nursing home holding onto bits and pieces of his past. Rachel is married to an abusive man and relives her abusive childhood at the hands of an alcoholic mother and a father who failed to intervene on her behalf. Rachel believes she is stuck in her marriage while trying to hide the awful truth from her daughter Lily. Finally deciding to leave her husband and hometown, Rachel makes contact with Mitch, her father, who doesn't know her but recognizes something familiar in Lily.
Critique
