Summary
Strange things are afoot in Madderstone Abbey, where the beautiful Penelope Lambe has been left unconscious by a fall after witnessing, it is believed, the Abbey's ghost. Soon after, a skeleton is found on the estate and identified as once-governess Elinor Fenn, missing these last 15 years. Would the proper Miss Fenn really have committed suicide? In order to save her from being buried in unconsecrated ground, Miss Dido Kent is asked to investigate.
Critique
Not surprisingly, this third installment in a fabulous Regency-era, cozy mystery series is another winner. Frustrated at having to depend on her brothers for money, Dido would still wish to remain her true self rather than marry for mere security. The first person accounts Dido sends in letters to her sister give readers a perfect glimpse into the inner workings of Dido's mind and tell us how she really feels about her doting Mr. Lomax. Highly recommend.
