Summary
Justine Meade lives in Seattle and her father is dying in Boston. She travels cross country with her dog, Mack. Justine is left behind at a rest stop, and Mack is unfortunately left with the trucker. The trucker abandons Mack on the side of a road, where he is eventually found by an older couple, Ed and Alice Parmalee, who are grieving the loss of their only child. Mack, now Buddy, slowly becomes an important addition to the Parmalee family as Justine desperately tries to find him.
