Summary
When Geraldine Coutts, a tribal enrollment specialist on a North Dakota reservation, is attacked and raped, she falls into a long, silent depression. Her husband, a tribal judge, goes through case files with the aid of his teenage son, Joe, looking for clues, leading Joe to the probable culprit. As Joe and his friends live through the summer, meeting girls, riding bikes, and pulling pranks, Joe plans his revenge.
Critique
The second in a planned trilogy about life on an Ojibwe reservation, this novel is equal parts coming of age story, mystery and social commentary. Moving and compelling. National Book Award winner.
